Thus saithH559 the LORD,H3068 He that remainethH3427 in this cityH5892 shall dieH4191 by the sword,H2719 by the famine,H7458 and by the pestilence:H1698 but he that goeth forthH3318 to the ChaldeansH3778 shall live;H2421 for he shall have his lifeH5315 for a prey,H7998 and shall liveH2421, H2425.
38:3
Thus saithH559 the LORD,H3068 This cityH5892 shall surelyH5414 be givenH5414 into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of Babylon'sH894 army,H2428 which shall takeH3920 it.
38:4
Therefore the princesH8269 saidH559 unto the king,H4428 We beseech thee, let this manH376 be put to death:H4191 for thusH3651 he weakenethH7503 the handsH3027 of the menH582 of warH4421 that remainH7604 in this city,H5892 and the handsH3027 of all the people,H5971 in speakingH1696 such wordsH1697 unto them: for this manH376 seekethH1875 not the welfareH7965 of this people,H5971 but the hurt.H7451

Then ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 said,H559 Behold, he is in your hand:H3027 for the kingH4428 is not he that canH3201 do any thingH1697 against you.

Then tookH3947 they Jeremiah,H3414 and castH7993 him into the dungeonH953 of MalchiahH4441 the sonH1121 of Hammelech,H4428 that was in the courtH2691 of the prison:H4307 and they let downH7971 JeremiahH3414 with cords.H2256 And in the dungeonH953 there was no water,H4325 but mire:H2916 so JeremiahH3414 sunkH2883 in the mire.H2916

Now when EbedmelechH5663 the Ethiopian,H3569 oneH376 of the eunuchsH5631 which was in the king'sH4428 house,H1004 heardH8085 that they had putH5414 JeremiahH3414 in the dungeon;H953 the kingH4428 then sittingH3427 in the gateH8179 of Benjamin;H1144
38:8
EbedmelechH5663 went forthH3318 out of the king'sH4428 house,H1004 and spakeH1696 to the king,H4428 saying,H559

My lordH113 the king,H4428 these menH582 have done evilH7489 in all that they have doneH6213 to JeremiahH3414 the prophet,H5030 whom they have castH7993 into the dungeon;H953 and he is like to dieH4191 forH6440 hungerH7458 in the placeH8478 where he is: for there is no more breadH3899 in the city.H5892

Then the kingH4428 commandedH6680 EbedmelechH5663 the Ethiopian,H3569 saying,H559 TakeH3947 from hence thirtyH7970 menH582 with thee,H3027 and take upH5927 JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030 out of the dungeon,H953 before he die.H4191
38:11
So EbedmelechH5663 tookH3947 the menH582 with him,H3027 and wentH935 into the houseH1004 of the kingH4428 under the treasury,H214 and tookH3947 thence oldH1094 cast cloutsH5499 and oldH1094 rotten rags,H4418 and let them downH7971 by cordsH2256 into the dungeonH953 to Jeremiah.H3414
38:12
And EbedmelechH5663 the EthiopianH3569 saidH559 unto Jeremiah,H3414 PutH7760 now these oldH1094 cast cloutsH5499 and rotten ragsH4418 under thine armholesH3027 underH679 the cords.H2256 And JeremiahH3414 didH6213 so.
38:13
So they drew upH4900 JeremiahH3414 with cords,H2256 and took him upH5927 out of the dungeon:H953 and JeremiahH3414 remainedH3427 in the courtH2691 of the prison.H4307
38:14
Then ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 sent,H7971 and tookH3947 JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030 unto him into the thirdH7992 entryH3996 that is in the houseH1004 of the LORD:H3068 and the kingH4428 saidH559 unto Jeremiah,H3414 I will askH7592 thee a thing;H1697 hideH3582 nothing from me.
38:15
Then JeremiahH3414 saidH559 unto Zedekiah,H6667 If I declareH5046 it unto thee, wilt thou not surelyH4191 put me to death?H4191 and if I give thee counsel,H3289 wilt thou not hearkenH8085 unto me?
38:16
So ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 swareH7650 secretlyH5643 unto Jeremiah,H3414 saying,H559 As the LORDH3068 liveth,H2416 that madeH6213 us this soul,H5315 I will not put thee to death,H4191 neither will I giveH5414 thee into the handH3027 of these menH582 that seekH1245 thy life.H5315
38:17
Then saidH559 JeremiahH3414 unto Zedekiah,H6667 Thus saithH559 the LORD,H3068 the GodH430 of hosts,H6635 the GodH430 of Israel;H3478 If thou wilt assuredlyH3318 go forthH3318 unto the kingH4428 of Babylon'sH894 princes,H8269 then thy soulH5315 shall live,H2421 and this cityH5892 shall not be burnedH8313 with fire;H784 and thou shalt live,H2421 and thine house:H1004
38:18
But if thou wilt not go forthH3318 to the kingH4428 of Babylon'sH894 princes,H8269 then shall this cityH5892 be givenH5414 into the handH3027 of the Chaldeans,H3778 and they shall burnH8313 it with fire,H784 and thou shalt not escape outH4422 of their hand.H3027
38:19
And ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 saidH559 unto Jeremiah,H3414 I am afraidH1672 of the JewsH3064 that are fallenH5307 to the Chaldeans,H3778 lest they deliverH5414 me into their hand,H3027 and they mockH5953 me.
38:20
But JeremiahH3414 said,H559 They shall not deliverH5414 thee. Obey,H8085 I beseech thee, the voiceH6963 of the LORD,H3068 which I speakH1696 unto thee: so it shall be wellH3190 unto thee, and thy soulH5315 shall live.H2421
38:21
But if thou refuseH3986 to go forth,H3318 this is the wordH1697 that the LORDH3068 hath shewedH7200 me:
38:22
And, behold, all the womenH802 that are leftH7604 in the kingH4428 of Judah'sH3063 houseH1004 shall be brought forthH3318 to the kingH4428 of Babylon'sH894 princes,H8269 and those women shall say,H559 Thy friendsH7965 haveH582 set thee on,H5496 and have prevailedH3201 against thee: thy feetH7272 are sunkH2883 in the mire,H1206 and they are turned awayH5472 back.H268
38:23
So they shall bring outH3318 all thy wivesH802 and thy childrenH1121 to the Chaldeans:H3778 and thou shalt not escape outH4422 of their hand,H3027 but shalt be takenH8610 by the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of Babylon:H894 and thou shalt cause this cityH5892 to be burnedH8313 with fire.H784
38:24
Then saidH559 ZedekiahH6667 unto Jeremiah,H3414 Let no manH376 knowH3045 of these words,H1697 and thou shalt not die.H4191
38:25
But if the princesH8269 hearH8085 that I have talkedH1696 with thee, and they comeH935 unto thee, and sayH559 unto thee, DeclareH5046 unto us now what thou hast saidH1696 unto the king,H4428 hideH3582 it not from us, and we will not put thee to death;H4191 also what the kingH4428 saidH1696 unto thee:
38:26
Then thou shalt sayH559 unto them, I presentedH5307 my supplicationH8467 beforeH6440 the king,H4428 that he would not cause me to returnH7725 to Jonathan'sH3083 house,H1004 to dieH4191 there.
38:27
Then cameH935 all the princesH8269 unto Jeremiah,H3414 and askedH7592 him: and he toldH5046 them according to all these wordsH1697 that the kingH4428 had commanded.H6680 So they left off speakingH2790 with him; for the matterH1697 was not perceived.H8085

So JeremiahH3414 abodeH3427 in the courtH2691 of the prisonH4307 until the dayH3117 that JerusalemH3389 was taken:H3920 and he was there when JerusalemH3389 was taken.H3920
