And ShechaniahH7935 the sonH1121 of Jehiel,H3171 one of the sonsH1121 of Elam,H5867 answeredH6030 and saidH559 unto Ezra,H5830 We have trespassedH4603 against our God,H430 and have takenH3427 strangeH5237 wivesH802 of the peopleH5971 of the land:H776 yet now there isH3426 hopeH4723 in IsraelH3478 concerning this thing.

Now therefore let us makeH3772 a covenantH1285 with our GodH430 to put awayH3318 all the wives,H802 and such as are bornH3205 of them, according to the counselH6098 of my lord,H136 and of those that trembleH2730 at the commandmentH4687 of our God;H430 and let it be doneH6213 according to the law.H8451

ButH61 the peopleH5971 are many,H7227 and it is a timeH6256 of much rain,H1653 and we are not ableH3581 to standH5975 without,H2351 neither is this a workH4399 of oneH259 dayH3117 or two:H8147 for we are manyH7235 that have transgressedH6586 in this thing.H1697
